XP1440-10W Robotic Welding for Shipbuilding Components in China

A Chinese manufacturer producing shipbuilding components for export uses the XARP XP1440-10W robotic welding system in its production process.

The customer's shipbuilding components are exported to markets including South Africa, South America and Southeast Asia. This is not a first-time cooperation with XARP: the customer has placed three repeat orders, providing a real example of an ongoing industrial robot application in shipbuilding component manufacturing.

For this application, the XARP XP1440-10W is used for gas-shielded welding together with a single-axis headstock-tailstock positioner.

Robotic Welding for Shipbuilding Components

The application shown in this project is the robotic welding of components manufactured for the shipbuilding industry.

The XP1440-10W performs the programmed welding movements, while the single-axis headstock-tailstock positioner supports and rotates the workpiece according to the required welding orientation.

This allows the robot and positioner to operate as an integrated welding setup rather than relying on the robot arm alone to access the required welding positions.

Watch the Shipbuilding Component Welding Application

The following video shows the XARP robotic welding application for the customer's shipbuilding components.

Gas-Shielded Welding with a Headstock-Tailstock Positioner

The welding process used in this application is gas-shielded welding.

For workpieces that need to be rotated during welding, a headstock-tailstock positioner can provide an additional controlled axis for workpiece positioning.

In this project, XARP supplied a single-axis headstock-tailstock positioner as part of the robotic welding setup.

For a similar project, the appropriate positioner configuration should be evaluated according to the actual workpiece dimensions, weight, center of gravity, welding locations and required positioning method.

Three Repeat Orders from the Customer

This project is part of an established customer relationship rather than a one-time robot purchase.

The customer has placed three repeat orders with XARP for its production requirements.

The repeat-order history is presented as a factual part of this customer's purchasing record. The specific reasons behind each repeat order are not attributed to the customer because no formal statement about those reasons has been provided.

For manufacturers and system integrators evaluating a robotic welding supplier, repeat orders from an existing industrial customer can provide additional context alongside application videos, technical specifications and project requirements.

Supporting an Export-Oriented Shipbuilding Component Manufacturer

The customer manufactures shipbuilding components in China for export to markets including South Africa, South America and Southeast Asia.

For an export-oriented manufacturer, the robotic welding system needs to be configured around the actual components and production process. Robot selection is therefore only one part of the project.

Workpiece positioning, welding access, fixtures, positioner configuration and welding requirements should be considered together when developing the robotic cell.

What Information Is Needed for a Similar Shipbuilding Welding Project?

For manufacturers considering robotic welding for shipbuilding components or other fabricated metal parts, useful information for technical evaluation includes:

  • Workpiece drawings and photos
  • Workpiece dimensions and weight
  • Material and thickness
  • Weld locations and joint requirements
  • Welding process
  • Fixture requirements
  • Required workpiece rotation or positioning
  • Production requirements
  • Photos or videos of the current welding process

With this information, XARP can evaluate the robot, fixture and positioner configuration according to the actual welding application.

Planning a Robotic Welding Project?

If your company manufactures shipbuilding components or similar fabricated metal parts, send XARP your workpiece drawings and welding requirements for application evaluation.

The robot and positioner configuration can then be discussed according to the actual component and production process.
